Aleksandr Gurnov

Aleksandr Gurnov hosts RT’s Spotlight programme.

He has been working for the channel since 2005, conducting in-depth interviews that focus on current events in Russia and across the world. He says that his main objective for the programme is to give RT’s international audience an insight into the Russian perspective on important global events.

Aleksandr is one of RT’s most experienced journalists. His career stretches back to 1973 when he took up his first correspondent jobs at national newspapers Pionerskaya Pravda and Komsomolskaya Pravda.

He soon switched to broadcasting, assuming the position of editor, author and presenter of a weekly political programme at the State TV and Radio Broadcaster of the USSR. Since then, Aleksandr has held such important posts as editor, senior editor and observer with the daily news programme Vremya at the State Central Television of the USSR and bureau chief for Russian Television in London.

He co-founded the news programme Vesti for the All-Russia State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) in 1991.

Aleksandr is also the recipient of many prestigious Russian state awards. In 1991 he was presented with the Defender of Russia award and in 2000 he was awarded the presidential decoration for Services to the Fatherland. In 1996 he was named ‘Best Reporter’ by the Russian Television Academy.

Away from work and international politics Aleksandr Gurnov enjoys sports – especially skiing, swimming and tennis. He also likes watching television, drawing and spending time with his seven-year-old son.

He is fluent in English, French and Amharic.
