B1 Maximum

B1 Maximum («Б1 Максимум») is a club and a concert-hall at the same time. Its three floors were packed when Avril Lavigne and Iggy & The Stooges were on stage. The club attracts popular mainstream musicians and bands who are not capable of filling sporting arenas. The club’s less than impressive service is notorious, as is its lack of toilets (a very sensitive issue, especially when 4,000 people gather at the venue). There’s also the problem of its small cloakroom. But for those who have been to similar clubs in Europe, it doesn’t seem to be an issue.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre («Большой театр») – has arguably the best dance troupe in the world, which is also the largest (some 225 dancers at the latest count). The Bolshoi’s main premises are now closed for restoration and are due to open in September 2009. It’s is already known that the first foreign troupe to perform on the renovated stage will be the La Scala from Italy. In the meantime you can enjoy both tried-and-tested classics, as well as modern additions to the répertoire on the less spacious New Stage of the Bolshoi. “Swan Lake” and “Giselle” are must- see ballets if you come to Russia for the first time. Tickets at the Bolshoi box office start from $5, but make sure you buy them in advance.
