Russian Rap on the Riviera

Published 19 May, 2008, 15:28

In true Cannes tradition, Russian rap artist Timati threw a VIP party following his show in the glitzy French Riviera film capital. RT joined him in the club to talk about his passions and ambitions.

Charismatic and cosmopolitan, Timati is fluent in French, English and hip-hop.

He grabbed the spotlight in his home country several years ago, and quickly became one of Russia’s most successful young singers.

His concert in Cannes, where eager fans queued for hours in the rain to get in, is a step in his ambitious road to conquer Europe and reach international audiences.

“I’m moving across Europe now and I hope to sign with an American label next year, and then I’m going to the States,” said Timati.

His motivating force, he says, is music.

“When I wake up I want to hear something, I want to hear the groove – I can’t live without music!” he said.

Music is his religion, language and lifestyle, and he’s happy to share it with his soulmates and fans.

Swept up in the Cannes film festival, Timati said he planned to make a movie himself. Just as soon as he has some free time between concerts and parties. “I’ve got two scripts just waiting for my time,” he said.

And the party shows no sign of stopping – Timati will be back on the Riviera again later this Summer.
