Moscow Supermoto gets dirty & wild

Published 26 May, 2008, 14:01

Supermoto, which combines road racing with motocross, came to Moscow over the weekend. The usual springtime sunshine was missing from the Russian capital as the heavens opened to deliver a deluge on to the track.

The first stage of the Russian Championships, which took place for the first time in 2005, was held on Sunday.

Conditions around the Kylatskoe track were perilous at best, and required all of the driver’s skill and concentration to deal with the tarmac, dirt, and jumps.

First up the amateur riders competed for the Esta Group Cup. There had been a display of stunt riding planned before the professionals took to the track.

There was some drama before the start of the second run as Yury Gavrosh's bike burst into flames on the starting grid. Fellow riders and officials rushed to his assistance to put out the blaze, but it was the end of his race.

Right from the start it was clear that the main fight for first place would be between the Ivanyutin brothers – Aleksandr and Sergey.

They were a cut above the rest of the field fearless in the face of the worsening weather conditions: what had previously been puddles were becoming small lakes on the approach to the jumps.

In the end it was Aleksander Ivanyutin who took first ahead of his brother Sergey by just over 2 seconds.
