Giant clown ‘emerges’ from sand – and wins!

Published 17 June, 2008, 18:53

A Russian artist has taken first place at a sand sculpture festival in Latvia. Tanya Kuznetsova's winning entry depicted a clown sitting on a wheel emerging from the sand.

The sculptors were asked to base their designs on the theme “Feast in the Castle”.

Around 400 tonnes of sand was brought in for the competition, held at Latvia's Jelgava Palace to commemorate its 270th anniversary. The Baroque building was designed by the architect Rastrelli, famed for the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg.
