Shoe attack on Bush immortalized

Published 30 January, 2009, 04:33

A statue of a shoe has been unveiled in the Iraqi town of Tikrit – hometown of executed dictator Saddam Hussein.

The artist who created the monument inscribed it with a poem honouring the shoe-throwing journalist Muntazer al- Zaidi, saying it represents the pride of the Iraqi people.

The monument, a big boot, honours reporter Al-Zaidi who gained world-fame when he flung his footwear at former U.S President George W. Bush during a Baghdad press conference in December.

Al-Zaidi remains in jail, accused of assaulting a foreign leader, with his trial postponed as his lawyer seeks reduced charges.
