Children and adults, workaholics and the unemployed have gathered at Luzhniki stadium and are dancing their shoes off, as the first ever Summer Dance Festival kicks off in Moscow.

The genuine passion of flexible movements of the body have intrigued people from all continents throughout time. The vigorous dances of Africa, the gentle group jigs of Scandinavia, the grace of classical dances and ballet, the amusing dances of the northern peoples, and the freedom-loving modern dances – they are all unique and expressive. The freedom of choice in the very variety is the basic principle of the first Dance Festival.

Being a sport and at the same time an art form, dance generally refers to rhythmic spiritual expression of the body and social interaction. Today dance has many faces – from break dance to tango, from ballet to swing. All these genres will be represented in Luzhniki on Saturday.

On the festival’s two dance-floors, performances and master-classes in most different styles will be held. For one day, Luzniki will be transformed into a major dancing pavilion where, in breaks between lessons of the Indian spiritual dance kuchipudi, Brazilian capoeira, or the passionate steps of true Latin salsa, people can make new friends, find like-minded fellows among the dancers and even fall in love.

Now that the culture of dance is evolving and causing more and more interest in people of all ages, the festival brings the highlights of contemporary and modern dance to the capital on June 20, and becomes the dancing continuation of the main musical event of the summer – the open-air jazz project “Usadba, Jazz”.
