The international premiere of Swiss film “Happy New Year!” takes place in Moscow on Sunday. The film is one of 16 films taking part in the main competition of the 31st Moscow International Film Festival.
The film’s name corresponds quite well to its New Year’s story. The action of the movie, directed by Christoph Schaub, takes place in the beginning of a new year – the best time for changes and beginning a new life over again.
As the director, Christoph Schaub, said at a media conference, on the one hand this film is a fairy tale, and on the other hand it’s a social story.
“It was important for me to tell about ordinary people who are living, so to say, on life’s roadside, on the side of losers. But they also dream, just as anybody else in the world, that New Year will bring something good into their life and it will change for the better. Today, as well as always, it is very important to give people hope,” the director said.
Thus, all the characters of the film hope for something which matters to them: Gloria recently left by her husband; Pascal, who is not very much in the mood for people; spouses Herbert and Anna-Mary whose life together is just boring with nothing happening in it; the magic of the New Year’s Eve will give a chance to everyone – something to change their lives.
Christoph Schaub is a significant name in Swiss culture. His life and creative work is tightly connected with this country. He debuted in direction in 1987 with the picture “Wendel” and won the prize for best debut at a film festival. Schaub has directed a total of 12 feature and documentary films. The best known among them are: “30 years,” “At the End of the Night,” “The Quiet Life,” and “The Young Man.”
“Happy New Year” will also be exhibited at Moscow’s Oktyabr cinema on June 22.
