The oldest fine arts magazine in the world has revealed the most complete list of 200 leading art collectors in the world, and Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich is among them.
Given that all the names on the list were put in alphabetical order, Abramovich’s comes second after Spanish businessman Juan Abello, known for his passion for both the old and modern Spanish art school.
The 42-year-old Russian billionaire is worth $8.7 billion according to Forbes. When he’s not spending millions on professional soccer, he buys modern art. The divorced father of five has been credited with helping his girlfriend Dasha Zhukova open an art gallery in Moscow, which immediately become one of the most trailblazing contemporary art venues in town.
Abramovich is not the only Russian on the list. Graduate of Columbia University, the 24 year-old owner of the Baibakov Art Projects gallery Maria and her father, businessman Oleg Baibakov, have been placed alongside Abramovich.
The majority of art collectors can be found not in Russia, but in America with 106 positions taken by US art aficionados. The list was drawn up by ARTnews editors on the basis of opinion polls with auction houses, art-dealers, museum directors, art curators and experts in the field from 22 countries.
