Security has been stepped up in Russia's southern republic of Dagestan, where an explosion killed a pedestrian on Friday morning. The homemade device was placed near a park lane some 150 metres from the city administration building in the republic's capital Makhachkala.

Police say the charge was equivalent to three and a half kilos of TNT.

The man killed has been identified as Zaur Abdullaev, a 48-year-old businessman.

Another explosion was prevented in the republic on Thursday when a bomb squad defused a device containing five kilos of TNT found near a road.

Local police say that a terrorist group may be attempting to destabilise the situation in the region.
