Safina & Sharapova beat compatriots, proceed to third round

Top seeded Dinara Safina has won her second match at the French Open in style, while Maria Sharapova survives against fellow countrywoman Nadia Petrova, winning 8-6 in the decider.
Dinara Safina continues to show why she is world number one and the top seed at the moment. The in-form Russian cruised past compatriot Vitalia Dyatchenko.
The 23-year-old powered through in straight sets 6-1 6-1 in less than an hour to claim a spot in the third round, where Safina will play yet another Russian – Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Meanwhile, former tennis queen Maria Sharapova is continuing her comeback on top of the women’s ranking. The 22-year-old overcame the resistance of 11th seeded Nadia Petrova in a three-set thriller to also secure a place in the third round.
