The director of Donbass Arena in Donetsk says the stadium is ready to become the setting for the fight between WBC heavyweight champ Vitaly Klitschko and WBA belt holder Nikolay Valuev.
Vitaly Klitschko had hinted that he’d love to challenge the “Russian Giant’ Valuev in his home country this September.
“We are very enthusiastic about Vitaly Klitschko’s idea,” Aleksandr Atamanenko, Donbass Arena director, said to Sport-Express newspaper. “Together with the Klitschko team we’ve started to look at the possibilities of organizing the fight in Donetsk.”
The newly built Donbass Arena is the first five-star stadium in Ukraine. 2008/09 UEFA Cup winners Shakhtar are to play their home matches there.
The official opening ceremony of the arena, which has a capacity of 50,000, is scheduled for August 29.
This is not the first time a boxing match has been planned to be organized at a football stadium.
Earlier this month, Vitaly’s younger brother Wladimir Klitschko defended his titles from Ruslan Chagaev if front of a 61,000-strong crowd at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
